Student, write a resume correctly

A first job is an important step in life. Are you students? We want to help you to make up your resume. You can write thesis statement checker and see if everything is clear in your resume.

The right resume – where to start?

Before writing a resume, it will be useful to know what HR managers, recruiters and employers pay attention to in the candidate’s resume in the first place.

According to the Orange County Resume Survey, these are:

previous work experience (45%);

qualification / skills (35%);

ease of reading / perception of information (25%);

achievements, benefits, projects (16%);

spelling and grammar (14%);

education (9%);

clear goal (3%);

keywords (2%);

contact information (1%).

The second step is to determine which type of resume is right for you: chronological, functional, or combined.

Types of resumes for employment

Chronological summary

Describes your jobs in chronological order, starting from the last. Suitable for those who are looking for a job in a familiar field, have extensive experience and seek career development.

Functional resume

Focuses on your skills, abilities and achievements, not jobs. This option is suitable for those who have little experience, who often changed jobs and do not want to draw attention to it, as well as those who want to change the field of activity or return to the labor market after a long break.

Combined resume

Combines the advantages of chronological and functional – includes a description of skills and a list of jobs. It is considered the most effective. Divide and combine your experience (depending on which vacancy you apply for), combine your skills with the companies where you got them, and be sure to focus on measurable metrics.

How to write a resume: step by step instructions

It will take you 3-6 hours to write a standard resume from scratch. But it is better not to do it in one go. At least before the final editing, give a resume to “lie down”.

When writing a resume, it is important to follow a certain structure so that the information is clear, orderly and easy to understand. We recommend that you send it in PDF format so that you do not have problems opening the file.

Write in simple sentences of 5-7 words. Avoid obscure abbreviations. Be sure to divide the text into paragraphs, choose a clear font. Use italics or bold to highlight headings. Remember that the summary should not exceed 2 pages. Ideally – 1 page.

Now let’s look at the blocks on how to write a resume and describe the key points.

Fill in the name and contacts

Here everything is very simple. Do not use work email to communicate – specify personal or create a separate one to search for work. Be sure to check that your email matches the format firstname@domain.com and does not suggest writing, for example, to a fluffy hare.

Add links to Facebook, LinkedIn or other professional networks, such as Behance. When specifying personal profiles on social networks, carefully check what you have there, so as not to get into an awkward position.

Describe the work experience

Start with your current or last job, moving on to older ones. Remember: only the experience relevant to the vacancy you are applying for should be mentioned. If you don’t have one, think about writing a functional resume and focusing on skills, not jobs.

Briefly indicate the name and scope of the company. Then – your position and role, as well as the main tasks. List the main achievements and do not forget to support them with arguments and evidence. Remember that achievements must be measurable, concrete, significant, and consistent with the position.

Describe education

Indicate the education that is relevant to your job and career goals. Include not only basic but also additional education – profile courses, trainings, etc. If your basic education is not relevant to the vacancy you are applying for, briefly explain the reasons for the change of profession.

Additional information and skills

This block should be approached very responsibly. Indicate your main qualities and skills required for the position you are applying for. Here – what programs you work with and what languages you speak.

It is not superfluous to mention your interests. They will help the employer understand what kind of person you are and how you will join the team. Important point: it is better to indicate hobbies that are directly or indirectly related to the desired position. Or your interests should be truly unique, not just “reading books and listening to music in my spare time.”

Why is a resume important?

Of course, your practical skills and experience are important, but in order for employers to see you as a responsible specialist, you should pay attention to the resume, because this is your business card, which will either give a happy future or take such a chance.
