Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has revealed that referee Stuart Attwell refused to award a first half penalty against Chelsea due to fear of controversy.
United believe they should have been awarded a penalty early in the first half when Callum Hudson-Odoi hit the ball with his arm.
This happened after Edouard Mendy punched away a ball from Marcus Rashford.
The VAR official immediately called the referee to look at the screen as it should have been a spot kick.
The referee decided not go give the penalty and the match ended 0-0.
After the match Shaw, spoke to Sky Sports and said:
“If it isn’t a penalty, there was no need to stop the match,” Shaw said.
“The ref even told Maguire that ‘if he awards a pen then it is going to cause a lot of talks after the game’. He told Maguire clearly it was a penalty.”
