Huawei announced its latest flagships in the “Mate” smartphone series, the Mate 30 and Mate 30 PRO, at an event it hosted in Germany on Thursday. These are the company’s latest offering in the flagship segment and are here to backed the already successful P30 series. The PORSCHE DESIGN Mate 30 RS naturally follow the device as yearly tradition. Notably, the Mate 30 series all comes in 5G models.
The Mate 30 features a 6.62-inch OLED screen with Full HD+ resolution, while the Pro variant has a 6.53-inch extremely curved (88°) Flex OLED screen that Huawei like to call “Horizon Display”, flaunting a Full HD+ resolution as well. These have prominent notches above the display. The Flex OLED used on the Mate 30 PRO un-sit the regular physical side buttons as it curve to both sides of the phone – the curved side screen instead act as the volume and camera shutter buttons that can be accessed at any of the sides. Moreover, the Mate 30 PRO supports Huawei M-Pen stylus that have 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity, but it not included in the box. Since the Mate 30 screen is flat, it retain the usual physical side keys.

These are powered by the latest Huawei in-house HiSilicon Kirin 990 7nm chipsets with dedicated NPUs. 8GB is the only RAM option, but you get up to 256GB storage alongside with it depending on the one you chose. Moreover, external storage expansion slots are provided. The slots, however, does not accept the regular MicroSD card but NM card that Huawei invented, claimed to be 25% smaller than the standard MicroSD card. With the NM card, the phones can be further expanded up to 256GB. The NM card shared the same slot with the secondary SIM card slot.
Perhaps, the major focus point and the outstanding feature of the new Mate 30 and Mate 30 PRO are their Leica cameras. The rear cameras are in square formation and are positioned in a circular frame at the center on the phones back. Triple camera is positioned on the Mate 30 back – the main sporting a 40MP Cine Camera with an f/1.8 aperture, the secondary a 16MP ultra-wide lens with an f/2.2 aperture, while the tertiary camera uses an 8MP telephoto lens for 3x optical zoom. These can captured low-light photography with supports of up to ISO 204800.
The Mate 30 PRO on the other hand, sports quad rear-facing camera – a standard 40MP f/1.6 Cine Camera (which is basically an ultra wide lens) with an f/1.8 aperture, a secondary 40MP SuperSensing camera with an f/1.6 aperture with OIS baked inside, a third 8MP f/2.4 telephoto lens that can render 3x loss-less optical zoom, 5x hybrid zoom, and up to 30x digital zoom, and a fourth 3D depth camera. These camera setup result in extreme low-light photo capture of up to ISO 409600.
32MP (f/2.0) camera, 3D Depth-Sensing camera for 3D face unlock, and a dedicated Gesture sensor resides inside the notch of the PRO version, while the non-pro settled for a single 24MP f/2.0 front camera. The phones security are provided by in-display fingerprint sensors and they are also water resistant certified, the Mate 30 PRO boasting of IP68 certification while the Mate 30 has a passable IP53 certification.
Furthermore, the Mate 30 has a 3.5mm audio jack, while the PRO lacked this features. The former is fuelled by a 4200mAh battery, while the later packed a 4500mAh battery, both supporting Huawei’s 40W SuperCharge fast charging, and 27W fast wireless charging and wireless reverse charging. Although the phones run Android 10.0 OS with EMUI 10.0 layed on top, the firm does not pre-installed Google apps out-of-the-box.
The PORSCHE DESIGN Mate 30 RS is basically the Mate 30 PRO 5G in all essense, but it comes in a handcrafted custom racing stripe motifs with all-natural leather back. It also have 12GB RAM and 512GB internal storage, their only difference.
