Wole Soyinka Biography
Professor Wole Soyinka was born on July 13, 1934, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. He was born into the family of Soyinka as the second child of the family of six.
His father was a senior teacher at the St. Peters School in Abeokuta while his mother was a petty trader and a political activist.
Wole Soyinka had his early life in his hometown where had completed his primary education at the St. Peter’s Primary School.
After passing his entrance examination, he gained admission into the Abeokuta Grammar School, Idi-Aba where he had completed his secondary education.
While in secondary school, Wole Soyinka wasn’t so intelligent and upon graduation, he got admitted into the Government College in Ibadan, Oyo State.
After completing his course in the college, he further attended the University College Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan).
Wole Soyinka spent two years in the college and before the end of the second year, he moved to the United Kingdom where he had completed his education at the University of Leeds; including his Master’s Degree in Art.

His early career can be traced back to 1958, during his days after completing his Master’s Degree.
He started as a playwright and debuted his first play which was titled The Swamp Dwellers.
Proceeding that, he has written other several plays among which are; The Lion and the Jewel, The Invention, and many others.
In 1959, a few months after publishing The Lion and the Jewel play, Soyinka moved to the United Kingdom where he had worked as a play reader at the Royal Court Theatre, London.
A few months later, he came back to Nigeria and worked at several positions in several institutions including; an English Language researcher at the University of Ibadan, an English lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife.
Wole Soyinka has founded several youths and media groups and organizations which have really helped in contributing to the growth of his country, Nigeria, and many other different countries of the world.
These groups include the Pyrates Confraternity which he formed while at the University of Ibadan and it also happens to be the first cult group in Nigeria.
The Pyrates Confraternity group was created to help the less-privileged students fight for justice, said Wole Soyinka.
