Prior to the election that saw him emerge as the new Barcelona president, Joan Laporta was very assertive about how he is the man to make Lionel Messi extend his stay at the club in the midst of all the crisis on and off the pitch.
While campaigning to be voted for, Laporta said if he emerges as the next president of the club, Lionel Messi will accept a new contract with the club, which was what most Barca faithful want to hear and see happen, but immediately after Laporta has become the club’s President, the assertion and confidence in his statement about the future of the club’s legend has changed, while addressing some people, he said President Laporta:
“After greeting the people at the club tomorrow, I will call Messi. Will I convince him? It will depend on him, I will do what I can within the economic possibilities of the club.” Now it’s not up to him as the club president but now up to Messi.
