Nokia 8 Officially Announced: Snapdragon 835, 6GB RAM and More

The new Nokia name flag bearer HMD Global, at a special event held in London today unveiled its long rumoured flagship smartphone, Nokia 8, which is the company’s “first” high-end device since it acquired exclusive licence from Nokia in 2016.

The phone is rectangular in shape but slightly curved at the edges. Its casing is made of aluminium unibody, measuring 151.5×73.7×7.9mm, which is not too thick and should be easy to handle and operate with one hand. It has a large bezel both at the top and the bottom, the top bezel accommodating an earpiece, a 13-megapixel wide-angle autofocus camera with f/2.0 aperture and PDAF, and two sensors (Proximity and Ambient light). Physical home button harboring a fingerprint sensor and two capacitive software keys are located on the bottom bezel.

Sitting right in the middle of these bezels is a 5.3-inch LCD display flaunting a brilliant Quad-HD resolution of 2560×1440 pixel. The display has a pixel density of 554PPI and it is secured against scratch by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Under the hood, the Nokia 8 is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor running at a full speed of 2.45GHz, paired with Adreno 540 GPU. HMD is offering the phone in two variants, 4GB RAM+64GB storage version and 6GB RAM+128GB storage version, both versions included with MicroSD slots that can accept up to 256GB of additional storage.

At the rear, the Nokia 8 sports dual vertically-aligned cameras, the first bearing a 13-megapixel RGB sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS), and the second a 13-megapixel monochrome sensor. The cameras has f/2.0 aperture, 76.9-degree wide-angle lens, IR range finder, and are accompanied with dual-tone LED flash. The front and rear cameras can be simultaneously use to take photos or record videos and stitch it together to make one masterpiece, thanks to Nokia Dual-sight technology. Users can also live-stream recorded video or audio to YouTube and other supported channels. Notably, all the three cameras on Nokia new flagship boasts of ZEISS optics.

Moving on, the Nokia 8 runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the-box—HMD Global however, promised to roll out Android O update in the near future. It has three microphones enhanced with Nokia acoustic technology algorithms for clearer details with minimal background noise. Nokia OZO Spacial technology also let users record 360-degree audio using the mics.

Connectivity options included with the device are Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi 802.11ac (MIMO), 4G VoLTE, 3G, 2G, GPS/A-GPS + GLONASS, NFC, and USB Type-C. It is backed by a 3090mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0.

The phone is already available for pre-orders in some markets. It will be available globally from September in Polished Blue, Tempered Blue, Polished Copper, and Steel color options. Pricing starts at €599 (US$700).
