Federal House Of Representative Confirms the Appointment of Service Chiefs

As far back as July 2020,  the Nigerian Senate and part of the general public had called on the service chiefs to step aside.

The replacement of the Service Chiefs by President Buhari comes after numerous calls for their sack over the increasing insecurity in the country, the presidency then responded saying “President Muhammadu Buhari would make the decision when “the time is right.”

Fast forward to 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari had appointed the new service chiefs on January 26, following the resignation of the former officers, and this appointment was awaiting the legislator’s approval.

The report of the Committee on Defence was presented by the Chairman, Babajimi Benson, during plenary on Tuesday and considered by the committee of the whole, before it was adopted by the House.

According to the committee chairman, the nominees were thoroughly screened. Their confirmation by the House of Reps today comes shortly after the Senate nominated the immediate past service chiefs as non-career ambassadors, despite criticisms in some quarters.

The names of the new service chiefs and their offices are; Major-General Leo Irabor as the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Vice-Marshal Isiaka Oladayo as the Chief of Air Staff, Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu as the Chief of Naval Staff, and General Ibrahim Attahiru as the Chief of Army Staff.
