Lionel Messi has now equaled the record of Brazilian football legend, Pele. Pele was the previous player to have 643 goals for a single club.
Messi who scored his team’s first goal to level after Valencia had taken the lead could however not muster his side to victory with Barcelona losing more ground in the La liga title race.
Barcelona are now eight points behind league leaders, Atletico Madrid, with Atletico having played a game less.

Meanwhile, Brazilian legend Pele who achieved same feat while playing for Santos has now congratulated Lionel Messi for matching a record that has lasted nearly 50 years.
Pele who took to Instagram had this to say: “When your heart overflows with love, it is difficult to change your path,” the 80-year-old former forward wrote on Instagram.
“Like you, I know what it’s like to love wearing the same shirt every day. Like you, I know that there is nothing better than the place we feel at home.”
“Congratulations on your historic record, Lionel. But above all, congratulations on your beautiful career at Barcelona.”
“Stories like ours, of loving the same club for so long, unfortunately will be increasingly rare in football. I admire you very much, @leomessi.”\
Pele’s record might even be surpassed on Tuesday with Barcelona travelling to Valladolid before the christmas break for La liga.
