Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 Officially Announced – All You Need to Know

Samsung has officially unveiled Galaxy Watch Active2, the company’s latest smartwatch that is here to succeed the first edition that was released in February. The device is based on Samsung’s Tizen-Based Wearable Platform 4.0 – it is no surprise seeing Samsung disregarding Wear OS again and embracing its in-house wearable solution, which of course is perfect.

The revamped One UI now has a simple interface with clear-through path that makes navigation easier, making things get done quickly without much fumbling. Samsung has also introduced a new feature that let users change the color of their watch face to their outfits color. This is done through the Galaxy Wearable app by taking a photo of the outfit and selecting from five different color patterns extracted by an inbuilt algorithm baked inside “My Style”.

The wristwatch comes in two variants; a 44mm model with a circular 1.4-inch Super AMOLED display, and a 40mm model with a smaller 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display, both having 360×360 pixel resolution, Always On supports, and Corning Gorilla Glass DX+ protection. These have rotating touch bezels that can be tuned clockwise or anti-clockwise for quicker access to favorite apps, and they are military grade MIL-STD-810G certified for durability against high and low pressure, temperature, and humidity.

Moreover, the Galaxy Watch Active2 is IP68 certified for water and dust resistant, and it can survive in 5ATM. It lacked a GPS, but it does support A-GPS and GLONASS for outdoor tracking. The smartwatch comes with new health sensors (located on the back) that are faster in automatically detecting high levels of stress in real-time. The health sensors work with Samsung Health app, which provides access to guided meditation programs through an integration with Calm. Heart rate sensor and Electrocardiogram (ECG) are not left behind.

Its functionality as a fitness tracker further extend to its ability to track all levels of sleep, including REM cycles, calorie, and 39 other workouts such as walking, running, cycling, and sleeping, with custom preference. The new Samsung wearable can be used for mobile payment with supports for Samsung Pay, thanks to NFC onboard. Pre-loaded apps include YouTube, Camera Control, Translator, My Fitness Pal, Spotify, and App Essentials.

Powering the watch is a dual-core Exynos 9110 processor clocked at 1.15GHz, paired with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage, for the Bluetooth version. The LTE version comes with an 1.5GB of RAM. The LTE and Bluetooth versions common connectivity are WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, A-GPS, and GLONASS, apart from the aforementioned NFC and Bluetooth 5.0. Sensors onboard includes Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Ambient Light, and Barometer.

Supported mobile phone operating system that the Galaxy Watch Active2 can be paired with are Android 5.0+, iOS 9.0+, and iPhone 5 and above. Samsung is offering the Galaxy Watch Active2 in two styles; a premium solid stainless steel with a leather strap, and a cheaper lightweight aluminum with a casual Fluoroelastomer (FKM) Band.

The 44mm model measures 44 x 44 x 10.9T and is powered by a 340mAh battery, while the 40mm model measures 40 x 40 x 10.9T and drawn its power from a 247mAh battery. The battery can be charged wirelessly via induction plate (WPC). The Galaxy Watch Active2 Alumnum version is painted in Pink Gold, Silver Cloud, and Aqua Black colors, while the stainless steel version comes in Gold, Silver, and Black colors.

The Galaxy Watch Active2 will be available for purchase in the U.S from September 27th while pre-order will begin on September 6th. Pre-order begins in Europe on August 23rd and sales on September 13th. The LTE version will be be available via mobile carriers in the U.S, including on T-Mobile, US Cellular, Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon from September 27th.
