Sharp has launched a mini version of its high-end AQUOS R smartphone called AQUOS R Compact. The AQUOS R made a great impression with it specs sheet when it launched earlier this year, but the new AQUOS R Compact attractive impression is on the outside and not on the inside.
The look, body shape and texture is explicitly different, but that is not the major thing that Sharp made changes to. The large top bezel above the display has been streamlined and is now almost bezel-less. This is done to the side bezels likewise, but the bottom bezel still remains large as it is. Sharp does borrow a leaf from Andy Rubin’s Essential PH 1 Phone though with the placement of the front camera, which cuts right through the display at the top.

The bottom bezel harbors the physical home key which in turn harbors the fingerprint sensor. Another feature worth mentioning is the AQUOS R Compact 4.9-inch full-HD IGZO display that touts twice the refresh rate of what is seen on other flagships, 120Hz to be precise.
An octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 Mobile Platform clocked at 2.2GHz powered the device on the inside, coupled with Adreno 512 GPU, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. There is a 16.4-megapixel camera at the rear with Hybrid Auto Focus and Flash, while an 8-megapixel camera sits at the front.
Moving on, the phone is IP68 certified for dustproof and waterproof. It runs Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box with the company’s proprietary EMOPA 7.0 baked inside. Sharp AI powered smart assistant EMOP comes pre-installed as well. Connectivity included are Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi 802.11ac, 4G LTE, 3G, GPS, and USB Type-C. It is backed by a 2500mAh battery.
The AQUOS R Compact will be available in Black, Gold, White, and Silver colors when it go on sale in Japan in December. No words on its pricing.
