Parents in Ghana have intensified calls for the government to shut down schools because of the fear of the rate at which the Covid-19 is spreading.
The National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTAs) say the children live in fear and panic especially as they hear of colleagues that contract the virus.

Alexander Yaw Danso, President for National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTAs) said “Ghana started as one, two, three cases but right now, there are 24,000 confirmed cases in the country, Do they want us to wait until September?” “The worse part of it all is that they do not test them too…how will they know if the students’ test positive for the virus?” He added
Tension started mounting among parents after news broke that 55 people made up of students and teachers at Accra Girls’ Senior High School tested positive for Covid-19.
Ghana Health Service (GHS) and Ghana Education Service (GES) released a joint statement saying that after testing 314 people for the virus in the school, 55 were tested positive.
GES says they will continue to test, trace, and treat cases in schools across the country to manage the Covid-19 cases in schools.
According to Cassandra Twum Ampofo, GES Spokesperson, some of the things they do to fight Covid-19 in schools include but not limited to;
• Authorities distribute nose masks to students
• GES intensify education on the use of nose masks, sanitizers, and social distancing
• Students now attend dining in smaller units to avoid overcrowding on campuses
• Testing of suspected Covid-19 cases across the country.
• Second mass disinfection exercise in schools
• Strengthen counseling and psychological support over the fear of Covid-19
Some of the reasons GES gave for why schools weren’t shut down are;
• For the sake of final exams
•Sending students home now aren’t safe. Keeping them in school will help them manage Covid-19 cases.
• Government has the opportunity to easily test, trace and treat students that contract the virus while they are confined in school.
Despite calls from National Council of Parent Teachers Association, GES say they have the interest of the students at heart and they will return home to their families after the final exams.
