It is a necessary precaution to first backup initial stock ROM that comes with a smartphone before tampering with the system files or doing advance configurations such as rooting, installing custom ROMs and custom kernels. Most people don’t know that doing nandroid backup before installing custom ROMs may save their neck in losing their IMEI. While is very easy to change or re-write MediaTek-based Android IMEI, it is very difficult to do so on Snapdragon powered devices. Samsung mostly use Exynos or Snapdragon processors in their phones, that is why you’ll hardly see any tutorial on changing Galaxy S5 IMEI on the internet because it proved difficult.

Root is required. if you haven’t root your Galaxy S5, download and install Kingoapp to your PC, install Samsung driver, plug in your phone, launch Kingoapp and follow the instructions to start the rooting process. You can also try SRS root.

- Download EFS BackUp/Restore zip file from here to your PC
- Enable USB Debugging and connect your phone to the PC via USB
- Unzip EFS Backup/Restore to your desktop, open the folder and double-click on EFS.bat to run it
