Losing pre-loaded IMEI is one of the issue smartphone users are currently facing – people experiment with their phones without first thinking of creating a backup incase something goes wrong. It is a necessary precaution to first backup initial stock ROM that comes with a smartphone before tampering with the system files or doing advance configurations such as rooting, installing custom ROMs and custom kernels. While some stock ROMs are easy to find if mistakenly formatted, some may proved very difficult to get.
Most people don’t know that doing nandroid backup before installing custom ROMs may save their neck in losing their IMEI. While is very easy to change or re-write MediaTek-based Android IMEI, it is very difficult to do so on Snapdragon powered devices. Samsung mostly use Exynos or Snapdragon processors in their phones, that is why you’ll hardly see any tutorial on changing Galaxy S5 IMEI on the internet because it proved difficult.
