Sharp AQUOS R2 with Dedicated Video Camera, 100Hz Refresh Rate Display Unveiled

Sharp has made official a new high-end premium smartphone in Japan dubbed AQUOS R2. The phone, which is the successor of last year AQUOS R, is touted as the world’s first smartphone to have a dedicated video camera by the company. There are two cameras arranged vertically at the back, the first sporting a 16.3MP sensor and the second a 22.6MP sensor. A 16.3MP camera is also equipped at the front.

The primary 16.3MP camera made only for video recording can record ultra-wide 4K video with its 135-degree wide-angle lens. While recording a video, built-in A.I can analyze the scene, identify object and auto capture special moment using the secondary camera. Sharp called this feature AI Live Shutter. The complete specs sheet of the cameras is yet to be revealed by the company.

AQUOS R2 cameras

Another notable feature is its supports of both Dolby Atmos and Dolby AC-4 audio enhancements for immersive listening experience. Sharp also claimed this as world’s first.

Moving on, the AQUOS R2 features a Dolby Vision certified 6-inch 19:9 IGZO LCD display with an astounding WQHD+ (3040×1440) resolution and 100Hz refresh rate. The display has a notch at the top that accommodates the front camera and there is a physical home key at the bottom bezel with a fingerprint sensor embedded underneath. Under the hood is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with Adreno 630 GPU, coupled with 4GB of RAM (LPDDR4X) and 64GB (UFS) of expandable storage (up to 400GB via MicroSD card).

The AQUOS R2 water and dust resistant body earned it IPX5/IP6X rating respectively.  It runs on Android 8.0 Oreo and comes with the usual connectivity including WiFi, Bluetooth 5, 4G LTE and USB Type-C. It is powered by a 3130mAh battery with fast charging.
