If you are still holding on strong to your Samsung Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge four years after it was released, you are not alone. I use the phone as a daily driver after purchasing it few months back (refurbished) and I can say it still hold up pretty much compared to today’s standard, especially after updating it to Android 8.0 Oreo. The sleek glass body and the QHD Super AMOLED screen are great to behold, and the rear camera still takes good picture.
Speaking of the rear camera, you can put it into better use by using it as a text reader apart from taking picture. Also, the camera can be used as document scanner and QR code scanner. This is what I want to talk about today. Apart from taking pictures, the Galaxy S7/S7 Edge camera can be use for something more as you will later find out in this post. There are many features provided within the camera interface, but Samsung also provide means to download more add-ons and effects via Galaxy Store.

Among these add-ons is Optical Reader – an app that lets you scan the pages of any written document and that can also be used to scan a QR code. Optical Reader is an application developed by Samsung, it is compatible with Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. It is straightforward in what it does – as already mentioned, it lets you scan document, scan a QR code, and it can also detect and extract texts from written contents and pictures.

All you need to do is launch the app and point the camera to the document or picture you want to scan or extract its texts, and then tap the capture button.
As shown above, you can turn the camera LED light on for use in low-light. All scanned documents and extracted texts can also be viewed later under the History tab. The accuracy of the text reader is about 95% as I still find some minute errors in extracted texts, but it does scanned document well. It is able to detect and translate QR codes properly, and will either open it within a browser or an app depending on the configuration.
It is a fun app to use. Students and office workers will find it most useful in their day-to-day activities. You can download it from Galaxy Store.
