SECTION B (COMPREHENSION)

Man has been defined as a rational animal. That is to say, reason is his essence, while biologically he is classified as an animal. While some, including humanists, may question whether or not there are other rational being outside of man, it cannot be doubted that man is the only animal which is gifted with the faculty of reason.

It is not clear on the materialist account how man came to attain reason, in as much as there is a vast world difference between the most primitive human child and the sophisticated, well-bred, city-dwelling ape. The latter may be seen to carryout some very simple operations indicating the use of reason such as, using a stick to beat down a bunch of bananas suspended in its cage. But the former would far outstrip it when it comes to using his reason to solve problems or respond to novel situations. Animal behaviourist have been eager to play up the so called ability of animals, particularly among the monkeys and higher apes, to communicate among themselves. It is however, doubtful if the simple animal communication that has been studied can come near to the complex and intricate system of communication that man possesses naturally.
