Former Flash Star Claims an 'Irritated' Showrunner Cut Their Contract Short - Premier Online Updates, Latest Tech Trends

The Boys actor Shantel VanSanten said her character, Patty Spivot, was written off of The Flash due to a disgruntled former showrunner.

Former The Flash actor Shantel VanSanten revealed in an interview that her character, Patty Spivot, was written off earlier than originally intended after being cast on another show prior to her unexpected firing.

“I don’t think it was supposed to end as quickly as it did,” VanSanten told TVLine. “I don’t know if a whole lot of people know this, but I actually worked it out with my contract so I could finish the whole season and be around. But a showrunner that’s no longer on that show was very upset with me, and so he put me on a train all of a sudden, and I left.”

“It was a bummer that somebody allowed their own personal feelings to come in the way of what was best for a story,” she continued. “I’m glad that person’s gone, and they’ve resolved so many of the issues on the set that were because of him. I’m still friends with a lot of the cast, and that feels great.”

Though VanSanten did not clarify which showrunner she was referring to, it is possible that her statements were in reference to Andrew Kreisberg, who was fired by Warner Bros. in 2017. Kreisberg, whose firing was a result of several sexual harassment complaints filed against him, was a co-showrunner on the early seasons of The Flash before moving to Supergirl. VanSanten did clarify that aside from the unnamed showrunner, she enjoyed her time on the show.

“There are foundational cornerstones in every comic book that fans really are invested in and want to see, and Barry and Iris ending up together was always going to be the ultimate,” VanSanten said. “I got to be ‘a few stops on the train ride,’ and I am so grateful, because playing Patty was so much fun. We just had the best time.”

The actor also added that she is open to returning, though she is unsure if her character remains relevant. She feels that because “Barry is in such a different place as a character now that it would be an odd divergence from the story.” Either way, VanSanten has found success after The Flash by starring as Becca Butcher on The Boys.The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanaugh. The series will return to The CW in 2021.
