Backlinks are important SEO ranking factors, maybe not totally backlinks, there are other ranking factors to be considered as well but that won’t be discussed in this article. A link from a site with good metrics is a very good backlink which in turn gives you Superman link juice, strong enough to push you to rank for your keywords on Search engine result pages.

Common Link Building Mistakes
Linking to sites with bad reputation:
This is one of the most common mistakes bloggers and upcoming SEOs do. Getting do-follow links from a site with very low or bad metrics. Before getting a backlink from a site, it is very imperative you use SEO tools such as Semrush or Ahrefs to do a quick analysis of the domain if it has been penalized for building links before or very healthy to get link juice from.
Buying/Selling Links:
As these may seem lucrative, it is very dangerous for your website. There’s what we call “Karma” here in Africa. When you buy links from sites like Fiverr, you are gradually saving for the burial of your site. These people get lots of orders and what they simply do is spam un-related websites and forums to get backlinks which might not necessarily be do-follow or no-follow. Well, they are both good links but the link juice can’t be as powerful as getting a link from a related niche site.
Backlink Exchange:
I’ve been in SEO Facebook communities for over 4 years now and I can testify to this that, a lot of SEO’s and Bloggers out there exchange links especially via comments. Giving each other a do-follow backlink.
Let me paint this as a scenario, imagine you donating blood to someone that needs help and a week later, the person donating back your blood to you. Doesn’t make any sense, does it? No link juice is passed and it doesn’t help boost your Google page rank.
Getting Backlinks from Irrelevant Niche sites:
This is another link building mistakes we do as bloggers and SEOs. I once came across a post recently, on a Facebook group where a guy got a gig to build links for an Amazon Affiliated Yoga blog. Dude was literally paying tech and entertainment blogs to give him backlinks. As this might seem very helpful for the blog at the moment but trust me the backlink history will be so shitty, I’ll tell my kids. Trump built those links.
Links without your Targeted keywords in Anchor text:
When trying to get started with link building on a new website, it is advisable to use the branded keyword as anchor text and then note, it is not necessarily all the time. There are times you should use power words like here, click here. I only want you to make sure when you check your backlink history, your branded keyword will have the highest percentage of backlinks.
Link building isn’t really as hard as you might think. You can build great links without having to invest much in content or paid promotions.
My advice? Ponder over these link building mistakes and see how you can improve your website. Even if you only have an hour or so per day, you should still be able to make some progress and build some decent links.
