Nigeria At 60: 10 Photos From 1st October 1960 Of Nigerians Celebrating Independence Day

A lot of fireworks and masquerades were all displayed on the 1st of October, 1960 when Nigeria got her independence.

On October 1, 1960, Nigeria gained independence from the British Empire.
As expected there were lots of celebrations around the country especially in the then capital, Lagos.

The celebrations were also topped by a grand ceremony hosted by the prime minister, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. Nnamdi Azikiwe was the then governor-general as at that time and that role he shared with Sir James Wilson Robertson.

Queen Elizabeth II, who was still the country’s sovereign, was represented by a member of the British royal family, Princess Alexandra.
