Delivered during the new jack swing time of the mid-1990s, the collection yielded the R&B hits “She’s Got That Vibe”, “Nectar Love”, “Devoted”, and “Slow Dance (Hey Mr. DJ)”, with Kelly singing lead vocals.
In late 1992, Kelly and Public Announcement left on a visit named “60653” after the postal division of their Chicago neighborhood.
This would be the lone collection co-credited with Public Announcement. Kelly isolated from the gathering in January 1993.
Kelly’s first independent collection, 12 Play, was delivered on November 9, 1993, and yielded the artist’s first number-one hit, “Knock N’ Grind”, which spent a record-breaking 12 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles diagram.
Ensuing hit singles: “Your Body’s Callin'” (U.S. Hot 100: #13, U.S. R&B: #2) and “Sex Me” (U.S. Hot 100: #20, U.S. R&B: #8).
The two singles sold 500,000 duplicates in the United States and were confirmed Gold by the RIAA.
In 1994, 12 Play was affirmed Gold by the RIAA, ultimately going multiple times platinum
