The Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Dr. Ibrahim Oloriegbe, says the Senate has passed a bill that will make health insurance obligatory for all Nigerians.
Oloriegbe revealed this at the set up of the Group Individual and Family Social Health Insurance Program (GIFSHIP) on Thursday in Abuja.

“We have passed it in the Senate. Two Committees on health from the Senate and the House of Representatives went after the bill, so the bill is before the House of Representatives just for concurrence.
“In like manner, the National Assembly has passed the National Health Insurance Authority Act. It won’t be the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) again, it will be the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). An arrangement in NHI(S) suggests only one arrangement. That is what has been going on.
“The NHIA will be an authority that will cover all plans and all that will be joined together. The fundamental piece of it is to make health security mandatory for all Nigerians,” he said.
The chairman said the e-NHIS structure had been supported by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and would in a little while be passed on.
He explained that the National Assembly had been supporting NHIS by appropriating the necessary resources for its use.
“Without resources for it, it can’t work, when we considered the NHIS 2020 spending plan, we totally made course of action for the achievement of the e-NHIS; N1.5 billion was obliged that,” he said.
Moreover, Oloriegbe said the senate had been working with the Federal Ministry of Health to improve health consideration by giving the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) convincing utilization.
“We have reviewed the manual for BHCPF in a joint exertion with accomplices to make the resource more worthwhile to Nigerians.
“Similarly, the commencement of GIFSHIP is fundamental to us. What we are doing today is outstandingly essential to the accomplishment of the objectives of GIFSHIP since we address people.
