Student Spent N139,000 on Sports Betting and N1m On Tithe From Stolen Money

A Physiology student of the University of Port Harcourt, Mercy Nkechi Ikogwe, has been alongside two companies, Elites Finance Investment Limited and Efinc Global Investment Limited, arraigned before Justice E.A. Obile of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State for defrauding unsuspecting citizens of the sum of One Hundred and Seventy-Nine Million Naira.

They were arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretense by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

One of the charges against the accused stated that Nkechi Ikogwe, including Elites Finance Investment, and Efinc Global Investment had in 2019 defrauded and obtained a total sum of N179,326,386 from innocent citizens whom you cajoled into investing in these companies in Port Harcourt, Rivers State with empty promises made to them that when they invest in your companies, a 15% interest will be made on all investments.

While interrogation was on, Miss Ikogwe stated that One Hundred and Thirty-Nine Thousand, Seven Hundred and Four Naira was misused to play some sports betting and she paid a sum of One Million Naira to a church in Port Harcourt as her tithe.

After the court proceedings, Justice Obile ordered that Miss Mercy Nkechi Ikogwe, be remanded in prison custody.

The case was however moved to October 19, 2020, where bail application will be determined.
