Followers on the other hand, can be liking to supporters or fans – they appreciate you, they support you, they value you for what you are and for who you have become. They want to be like you, and they are your true fans all the way. In one word, they are your disciples.
Of course, it is a great feeling to know that you have the attention of a lot of people. Those fans do make us feel important, don’t they?
When it comes to Facebook, you can have both friends and followers. However, Facebook implement these things differently on its platform and many are confused by the way they were implemented. Not all users know the difference between friends and followers. This is what I will be talking about today.
In this article, you will learn the difference between friends and followers on Facebook. You will learn how to identify the people that are your friends and the people that are your followers. You will also know what “friends” and “followers” really mean on Facebook.
Facebook is an online social platform where friends, families, colleagues, and other different people of life meet to discuss, share ideas, communicate, and educate.
For an user to be a friend with another user, he must first add the person as a friend and the invitation must be accepted. Once the friend requests is accepted, both users will become friends and they will be able to chat, like each other status, and post comment in each other profile.
For example, if Dave see Mike on Facebook and want to make him his friend, he will first need to send Mike a friend request by tapping the add friend button in Mike’s profile.
Mike will then receive a notification stating “Dave wants to be his friend”, which he need to accept before both of them can become friends on Facebook.
He can reject the request if he does not want to become a friend with Dave, however, if he reject his request, Dave will automatically become Mike follower.
Whenever a friend request is rejected, the person that send the request will become the follower of the person that rejected the request. As a follower, you will be able to see the published status updates of the user that rejected your request in your home feed if the user set it to public.
You may also be able to like the user post, but you may not be able to comment on the post depending on the user’s privacy settings. If a Facebook user set his posts and status visibility to friends only, the post will be hidden to his followers (the people that he rejected their friends request).

For friend requests that is accepted, the Facebook user that initiated the request will become the friend and the follower of the user that accepted the request. Both Facebook users will be able to comment on each other posts, share each other posts, chat, comment, like each other posts, and much more.
Facebook, however, do provide an option that let friends unfollow each other without unfriending. You can be friends with another Facebook user and chose not to be his follower, this means, you won’t see the user’s status update in your home feed. You will only see his post if you directly view his profile.
As a Facebook user, you can also chose to follow another Facebook user without adding the user as a friend by clicking the “follow” button in the user profile instead of “add friend”. You won’t be his friend if you only follow him, but you will be able to see his status update and posts in your home feed if he set the post to public.
For Pages, once you like a Facebook page you automatically become the page follower. However, you can unfollow a page by clicking the “unfollow” button in the said page without “unlike”. If you unfollow a page, you won’t see the page posts and updates in your home feed.
These seem a bit complex, but this is how Facebook works. You can chose to become a friend of another Facebook user without following him, and you can follow a Facebook user without adding him as a friend. Facebook makes it easy that way. You will find both the “follow” and “add friend” buttons in each user profile (depending on the user privacy settings).
