Keane praised the quality of his international captain – having seen him up close in the recent international break but was pleased with how the gameplan worked in terms of keeping him quiet.

“Everyone knows how lethal Harry is. I saw it all last week in training, his finishing is a joke,” said Keane to Everton’s official website.

“It was important we stopped the ball getting into him and we did that well. The ball he had was limited, especially in dangerous areas.

“Allan is a defender’s dream. He is always there on the striker’s toes, winning the ball back. He does a lot of running, puts in a lot of tackles.

“It is great to have him there. He was class.”

Everton looked every inch a top six side yesterday, with Tottenham seeming like the side with the psychological demons and the work to do to bridge the gap.

Carlo Ancelotti’s 4-3-3 system was slick, disciplined and dangerous. It was a far cry from Everton’s last visit to Spurs back in July.

Everton have had their defensive woes and keeping a striker as deadly as Kane quiet is no mean feet but they did it with a minimum of fuss.

The key is consistency now, and Everton kick off their EFL Cup campaign against Salford in midweek. The competition represents their most likely chance of a trophy this season.
