Montblanc, the German jewellery and luxury watch maker, has launched a new smartwatch running Google’s Android Wear 2.0 operating system called the Summit. The new device, which is the company’s first watch with smart features is endowed in premium outfit made of luxury items to give it a distinct classic look over other smartwatches in the market.
The wrist-worn is offered in four different options with different materials, the first wears a black PVD coated steel; the second a bi-color stainless steel case with black PVD coated stainless steel bezel; the third a stainless steel case with satin finish; while the fourth is wrapped in a grade 5 titanium case with satin finish. The Montblanc Summit features a 1.39-inch circular AMOLED display with 400×400 pixel resolution, protected by curved Sapphire glass. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor and there is 512MB of RAM onboard for multitasking and 4GB of built-in storage. Notably, the watch comes equipped with a heart rate sensor for monitoring heart rate activities. It can be paired with smartphones running Android (4.3+) or iOS (9+) via Bluetooth to receive incoming notifications alerts. It is also WiFi enabled.
The Summit is fairly waterproof (water resistant will perfectly fit) and dustproof with IP68 rating, meaning, it can survive splashes, light swimming and can be use while bathing. Sensors included are Gyroscope, accelerometer, ambient light, E-compass, and Barometer. It is fuelled by a 300mAh battery with magnetic charging.
The smartwatch will be available from May at a starting price of $890 via Montblanc website and authorized Montblac retailers.
Sidenote: Although Montblanc claimed this is its “first” smartwatch, we couldn’t but remember Montblanc e-Strap that was released in 2015, which is an “underwrist” smartwatch that can be use along with any traditional watch. e-Strap is smart in the sense that it comes with a digital OLED display; can be paired with smartphones running Android or iOS; can track users outdoor activities via built-in pedometer and accelerometer, and can be use to control a phone music player.
