Passengers Stranded As Aviation Unions Shut Down Arik Air Over Workers’ Benefits

Aviation unions on Friday shut down operations of Arik Air over the supposed refusal of the management to fulfill an agreement to pay workers’ terminal benefits.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the unions, the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), obstructed the passage of the carrier’s central command in Lagos, carrying placards with different inscriptions.

A part of the inscriptions read, “End Arik Brutality”, and “Sign our state of administration and Recall All Staff”.

The unions asserted that few individuals from staff had been furloughed for a really long time and that annuities were being owed.

Mr. Innocent Atasie, ATSSSAN Chairman, Arik Air branch, disclosed to NAN that the issue had waited for long and vowed to proceed with the strike till all requests were met, like all endeavors to determine the issue had fizzled.

“The quarrelsome issue is the marking of the states of administration which we have been haggling for as far back as three years. However, the main perspective of excess is the severance bundle.

“We have looked for intercessions from the Ministry of Aviation, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Ministry of Labor, and different partners,” he said.

The chairman said that the unions on Nov. 10, had a joint gathering with NCAA, Ministry of Aviation, Ministry of Labor, and partners to locate an enduring answer for the waiting emergency between the unions and Arik Air management and that it concurred at the gathering Arik management would pay a bundle of essential compensation, lodging, and transportation, as a component of workers’ terminal benefits.

According to Atasie, the installment should be made inside three weeks to workers’ profit above N330,000, while those procuring under N330,000 should be paid inside about a month.

NAN reports that Arik Air had before been closed down on Sept. 14, making this the second time that the carrier’s operations would be closed down.
