DJI, the known drone and quadcopter manufacturer, has foray into the action camera ecosystem with the launch of its first rugged compact action camera dubbed Osmo Action. The ecosystem, mainly dominated by GoPro, is facing a stronger challenge this time. DJI stepping into the action camera scene is a strong signal that the firm may have more in stock to compete in this less-competitive market.
The Osmo Action can shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second or at 30 frames per second with HDR enabled, and can record Full HD (1080p) and HD (720p) slo-mo video at 240 frames per second using its 12MP 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor (128° FOV). The highest video bitrate it can attain is 10Mbps.
The new DJI 4K action camera have two color screen mounted to the front and back, respectively; the front has a 1.4-inch display with a 300PPI pixel density, while the rear touch-responsive screen has a 2.25-inch display with 640×360 pixel resolution and 325PPI pixel density. Both display have 750 nits of brightness for unrestricted viewing in direct sunlight.
The company’s proprietary “RockSteady” electronic image stabilization do all the balancing in uneven ground to make sure captured scenes are smooth and stable. The stabilization even works when recording 4K 60fps video. Moreover, users can control the camera hands-free using DJI’s mobile app available for Android and iOS, which paired the mobile with the camera via Bluetooth or WiFi.
It is waterproof and it can be mounted on GoPro mounts for steady shot. The Osmo Action is accompanied by new range of accessories – these include frame kit, adhesive mount, waterproof casing, filters, extension rod, floating handles, 3.5mm adapter, and charging hub.
The action camera is available on DJI store for US$349. It will start selling at other authorized stores from May 22nd.*ADS
