Asus at its special event hosted in Barcelona on Tuesday announced its first 2018 flagship device, the ZenFone 5Z (ZS620KL). The firm also introduced a lookalike lower-specd ZenFone 5 (ZE620KL). Asus have done a good job this time in upping its game in the flagship segment amidst the competition by introducing something new, distinguishable, and of distinct appearance from other smartphones that made it out at this year Mobile World Congress.
Speaking of the ZenFone 5Z, Asus have further pushed the boundary of what is basically accepted as the normal screen-to-body ratio by maximizing the display area and smoothly blending it with the overall design of the smartphone. The phone boasts an astounding 90% screen-to-body ratio, thanks to its more elongated 19:9 aspect ratio and its top notch design. While the top notch is not something new seeing that the last year iPhone X has the same, we still very much appreciate its use here. There is also ZeniMoji for Android fans that are enticed by Apple’s Animoji.

The phone 6.2-inch Gorilla Glass protected Super IPS curved display features a Full HD+ (2246×1080) resolution with 500 nits of brightness and a contrast ratio of 1500:1. Asus said the display uses some sort of A.I to auto adjust the display color temperature. Asus Blue-light eye care filter is also implemented in the display to filter out harmful rays that may be dangerous to the eye. Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 octa-core 64-bit processor powered the hardware, while Android 8.0 Oreo polished with ZenUI governs the software.
Lets talk about the camera, the ZenFone 5Z like many others these days packed two cameras at the back, the first (main) sporting a 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, while the second boasts an 8MP f/2.0 sensor with 120-degree wide-angle lens. There is an 8MP camera at the front too. As could be expected, Asus has implemented A.I into the camera functionality to make it smarter. The work of the A.I is to auto detect scene before capture. There are 16 scenes in total that the A.I can analyze and picked from, easing manual adjustment in certain conditions.
In audio, you get dual 5-magnets speaker with NXP Smart Amplifier, and you also get Hi-Res 192kHz/24b-bit audio supports and DTS Headphone: X if you choose to use an earphone.
Asus is offering the ZenFone Z5 in 4GB RAM+ 64GB storage version, 6GB RAM+128GB storage version, and 8GB RAM+256GB storage version.
The ZenFone 5 specs is identical with the ZenFone 5Z. You get the same premium design, width, height and weight too, but it is powered by a cheaper yet efficient Snapdragon 636 chipset and not Snapdragon 845. Also, the maximum RAM and storage options available is 6GB and 128GB, respectively.
