There are special rules in U.S. immigration that allow permanent residents to apply for citizenship after three years.

The spouse of a U.S. citizen can file for form N-400, an application for Naturalization on the term that they have been married for at least three years.
Requirements for Citizenship through Marriage
If you intend to apply for U.S. citizenship through marriage, there are several criteria to qualify for it.
1. You must be 18 years and above as at the time of filling out it.
2. You must be a permanent resident legally at the time of filling out the N-400 application.
3. You must be married to a U.S. citizen for at least 3 years before applying.
4. By the time you take the Oath of Allegiance, you must still be a spouse to the U.S. citizen.
5. Be continually residing in the United States as a permanent resident for a minimum of three years immediately after you file your application and up till the time of naturalization.
6. Be present physically for 548 days ( 18 months) in the United States outside the three years you start processing your application.
7. Reside within the USCIS district or state for at least three months.
8. Show that you understand the English Language, and also possess the ability to read, write, or speak basic words.
9. Exhibit that you understand the history, principles, and forms of government of the United States.
10. Show good moral conduct for a minimum of three years, until naturalization.
11. Exhibit that you are for the good and happiness of the United States at all times.
